💀 💀 💀 Crematory (Sweden) "Denial" (EP) (1992) 💀 💀 💀 Звезда шведской олдскул дэт-метал группы CREMATORY горела ярко, но недолго. Собрались в 1989, а в 1992 вышла последняя официальная запись коллектива. Дискография - четыре демоленты менее 20 минут каждая и данный ЕР продолжительностью 15 минут вышедший на лейбле MBR Records. Маловато будет. Да, но почему группе следует уделить внимание? Три причины: 1. Old school, первопроходцы. Из уважения к сединам. 2. В группе играли довольно известные впоследствии персонажи: Johan Hanson (REGURGITATE - лучший в Швеции goregrind, даже не пытайтесь спорить!!!) Stefan Harrvik (NECROPHOBIC - известная команда 1-й лиги. Стабильна и хороша) Mats Nordrup (REGURGITATE, GENERAL SURGERY - это надо просто слушать, AFFLICTED - уникальный проект, синтез KING CRIMSON, techno death и скандинавской мифологии) Urban Skytt (REGURGITATE, NASUM - без комментариев) А на первом демо в качестве вокалиста мы с удивлением обнаруживаем деятельного симфониста, рунопевца и знатока Лемурии Christofer Johnsson (THERION)!!! Вот как бывает... 3. Последняя причина. Музыка - смесь формирующегося тогда swedish death, сырого и свирепого и американского old school плана AUTOPSY. Why can't more bands kick this much ass? Seriously, this band is insanely underrated. All those twats who worship shit like Cryptopsy should hear this shit, and then just spontaneously combust. Anyway, on to the music. All 4 tracks here fuckin slay. Assloads of riffs all over the place, and memorable ones at that. I love how evil sounding the riffs are, bands these days sure don't know how to write a good riff like the many awesome ones you can find on here. Its mostly fast to mid paced, more mid paced than anything. The solos are pretty damn good too, above average. The Vocals are excellent as well, definitely better than most. The drumming is well executed as well. This is one of those albums (or ep I suppose I should say) that won't leave your cd player for awhile. Best song would be any of them, one of my favorite riffs is on Chunks of Flesh at 2:36 when the solo comes in. That solo is breif but good, and the riff just demands that you stop whatever you're doing and bang your head. The whole thing is pretty much that good however, no boring shit here. Its truly ashame that they were never able to come out with a full length album. I heard a rumor that they're going to remaster these demos; one could only hope. I hadn’t known a ton of Swedish death metal bands so I decided to look into them. Crematory happened to be the first one I had checked out. I can honestly say I’m pleased with this EP. It’s only four tracks long, but it’s pure awesome. Any fan of that old school sound needs to check into this. As with old school death metal that came out in the late 1980’s and early 1990’s, there’s that overlapping style. The riffs are simple, but come with a ton of energy and heaviness. Crematory falls under this category. Though, the riffs are infact creative. ‘Chunks of Flesh’ is a good example, as it has a lot of melodic sound in the progression, but easily moves into something more barbaric. I call it barbaric because it’s mainly primitive when it comes down to technicality. Though, that’s not a negative thing in my opinion. I like simple more than technical. The fast-paced, powerful riffs just give a brutal edge to the music. Along with the riffs, you have the blast beating drums. What would death metal do without blast beats? I don’t even want to think about that one. The drum work is very consistent throughout the album. Along with the drum work, the bass gives the music a chunk, thick sound. It’s very agreeable with the music. The vocal work are deep grunts, which remind me of bands such as Carcass and the likes. Everything in this album just blends together to bring you a morbid EP. I don’t have really anything bad to say about this. I want more of this style of music, and that’s about it. Crematory is a great gateway band to get into if you’re looking for that old school Swedish death metal. They’re writing is very compatible with my tastes, and I just love this stuff…and you should too. https://www.metal-archives.com/reviews/Crematory/Denial/11134/overkill666/135431 ========== Fucking Great Death Metal - 90% (c) CHRISTI_NS_ANITY8, April 4th, 2008 Until few days ago I knew just one band with the moniker Crematory, and that was the gothic group but I didn’t know anything about another one from Sweden. This one plays extreme death metal and it’s great. But you must know, anyway, that despite the year and the place, they don’t play Swedish death metal like early Entombed and so on. They are more “American style” death metal with some, but few influences from their mother country. Being part of an EP, these tracks features excellent production and they are really powerful. “Into Celephais” is a great song with an hyper fast start and following blast beats. The up tempo parts are really Swedish in the way they are played while the guitars create an impenetrable wall of pure brutality. They are the thing you notice first on these songs. The vocals are quite growly but not excessive or chaotic. The influences can come from Napalm Death during the blast beats session (Harmony Corruption period) and Slayer for the way they play the guitar solos: shredded, fast and with no melody at all. The guitars sound can be seen as a very treble-distorted one with some influences from Repulsion. Anyway, this is really powerful and heavy. The blast beats are restless and really great with a production that exalt each instrument perfectly. “Chunks Of Flesh” has a weird, in late Death style, solo with a keyboard sound as a base under it. I love the doomy beginning with following speed restart in the songs and “Denial” is a good example of this. Unbelievable the group’s power either during the fast parts or during the mid paced ones. The riffage is not complicated but well structured anyway and very, very catchy at the point of screwing your neck doing headbanging. “Unconsecrated Ground” is total violence too but with the always weird solos and the terrific stop and go with speed restarts. I can only say this is one of the best EPs in my collection. This is a pure mix of incredible brutality. My regret is that they didn’t put out an entire album. I was actually stunned when I first saw this, because I previously had no idea that it even existed. I thought to myself "Well, the (new) logo looks stupid, but the cover art rules!". I glanced over the song list, noticed some familiar titles, and immediately reassured myself that this was indeed the Swedish Crematory; but the doubt made its comeback once I placed the needle on the record... As soon as the music hit, I was in disbelief. What happened to the crunchy, downtuned guitars? The pounding double bass? Where is the trademark Crematory heaviness?! I didn't want to consider the idea that these guys sold out, but the evidence was compelling. I listened to the whole thing, but didn't remember any of it because all I could think about was the string of bad decisions that was made here. If M-A was around back then, I would have probably given this EP a 40%. Fast forward five or six years. I decided to give it another listen, this time trying not to think about the massiveness of "Wrath from the Unknown" and almost pretending that this was a different band altogether. I realized that "Denial" is actually a pretty cool piece of vinyl, and not nearly as bad as I wanted to believe. But, as much as I'd like to, I can't just review this as separate material and not make any contrasts to the brilliance of the previous two demos. The fact of the matter is, this is Crematory, and this is indeed a follow-up to those tapes... When I listen to this vinyl, I see a backwards reflection of Crematory. The only elements this really has in common with the first demos are the vocals, and the fact that two of the songs are re-recordings of previous versions. Everything just sounds so damn thin. The guitars have a tone that's along the lines of speed metal, the bass has lost nearly all its distortion, and the drumming is completely watered down. On the plus side, the production is very clear and the vocalist retains his deep, throaty growls from before; but these things aren't enough to give this EP a positive impression. "Denial" contains four songs. Two are new, two are old. I'll cover the new ones first. "Into Celephais" is a fast-tempo track with plenty of blastbeats and technical, semi-melodic guitar leads. There's some choppy riffs about mid-way through that sound like shit, but the guitar solo towards the end closes the song on a good note. The title track is just as aggressive in the beginning, filled with some catchy tremolo riffs and somewhat heavy double bass drumming. A processed vocal effect is used later on that actually sounds pretty killer. Unfortunately, the second half of this song is more upbeat and incredibly boring. "Chunks of Flesh" was originally found on "The Exordium" and has been re-recorded here (why?) in a very mediocre way. The blasting is absolutely terrible. It's all highs with a miniscule touch of snare. It's almost like the drummer's right hand gets progressively weaker as he continues with the blast. In a nutshell, this song sounds like At the Gates covering Crematory. Take that as you will. "Unconsecrated Ground", from the second demo, isn't much different. Another average rendition of a very above average song. The guitar solo in the middle is really bad and way too high in the mix, while the brief bass breakdown sounds like a grunge band enticing the crowd to spin their flannels around in the air. I'm sorry, but I really can't get into the new versions of these songs. Everytime I hear them I just want to take the vinyl off and pop in the tapes! "Denial" is simply put, a disappointment. To my surprise, many people actually dig this mini-album and consider it one of the better things to come out of Sweden.
